"I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system," Bush told CNN television, saying he had made the decision "to make sure the economy doesn't collapse."

That's like saying:

• I've abandoned being faithful to my wife in order to save my marriage.
• I gave up on my diet in order to lose weight.
  

To save the free market system, the market would have to be free in the first place to allow for failure.
