Video: Zo And Libertarian or Liberal-tarian?

Zo hits the nail on the head with his video about Capitol 'L' Libertarians.

I think many conservatives have a strong libertarian streak to them (small 'l'). Which is to say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom". But the Large 'L' folks seem more about the free sex and drugs-atarian rather than someone who wants a smaller government.

A Response To Katha Pollitt, Member Of The Famed Journolist

Been out of town for the last week and now I'm able to get back into the normal daily grind of blogging.

Catching up on some of the Daily Caller's releases of the Journlist email archives when I noticed this from Katha Pollitt:

Fascism was a historical phenomenon. That’s why I don’t like the way the word is used today. Fascists wanted a big all-powerful state that would both reach down into people’s lives at the most intimate level and support the( racially pure) masses economically through jobs, public works, and so on. That doesn’t have much relation to what american rightwingers want. They want a tiny defunded state that would use its diminished power and authority mostly for war, border patrol, prisons, repression of dirty effing hippies etc. but would leave ordinary citizens to sink or swim. Unlike the German or Italian fascists, today’s US rightwingers have nothing concrete to offer people. Just the pleasures of racism and selfishness and fear.

With the exception of the last line, she almost gets conservatism.

The war line is a bit much. A strong national defense is preferred in a world with other nations who at their morning prayers shout "Death to the US!" and trying to develop nuclear weapons.

The hippies argument I half to agree with. Not so much as what conservatism is but what any normal, rational person ought to do.

As for the "ordinary citizens to sink or swim." Well, not to put too fine a point on it but yeah. Duh. It's personal responsibility and liberty. It gives Americans the chance to succeed and, strangely enough, the chance to fail. Which is a form of success depending on how they pick themselves back up.

Anyway, is it just me or is the irony alarm going off when she's talking about a government who is all reaching into the lives of the population? If I may take a little bit of liberty with her quote "Fascists wanted a big all-powerful state that would both reach down into people’s lives at the most intimate level and support the( racially pure) masses economically through jobs, public works, and so on". It's a little bit closer to what this administration is looking to do. Case in point, making it a law for everyone to buy an FM radio.

I'm not even going to get into what Obamacare will entail.

But for an idealoge like Katha Pollitt, she can't quite square that circle.

I've heard rumors about her being right of center but I think this pretty much confirms it. Janine Turner is out, promoting her new site, Constituting America. From their mission statement:

A renewed, rekindled enthusiasm and a patriot’s desire for the understanding of our Constitution begins with its accessibility. Challenging the mindset of those who consider our Constitution to be antiquated, is our mission. An enlightened America regarding her roots, her basis, and her thesis is the key to America’s pertinent survival. Americans have rights. Americans must have knowledge to understand them.

Constituting America’s mission is to reach, educate and inform the youth and all citizens through modern technology and modern means, because we must not let those who devalue freedom dominate the debate.

She's probably best known for her role in the show, Northern Exposure. She wasn't quite as blond then. She had more of a pixie cut.

*Which is one of the cooler names for a blog, in my opinion.

More Like Gimp Boy Conservative

I know what Robert Stacy means by this but I have to disagree with the term 'Reservation Conservative'.

This is evidently a play on the term "reservation Indian," denoting the harmless, domesticated breed (e.g., David Brooks) as opposed to us buck-wild conservatives who are prone to guzzling constitutional firewater and taking some liberal scalps.

To me, Brooks is more of a Gimp Boy Conservative. Open the box, bring out the gimp, let him say a few things as a token conservative and back in the box he goes. Brooks is getting way too use to being in the box.

This was, as you know, the theme of the National Topsider's exclusive January conference at the private Breakers Club in Nassau where I hosted a veritable murderer's row of top tory thinkers to diagnose the troubles with conservatism. Dame Peggy Noonan was there, of course, along with Kathleen Parker, Douglas Kmiec, and those two mighty Davids of conservative intellect, Brooks and Frum. But enough of the namedropping. The order of the day, after mixed badminton doubles, was to formulate an Rx for our ailing patient. In this regard we were in surprising accord: in order to survive, conservativism simply must start appealing to a better class of people.

"Alas, were it so easy," interrupted Brooks, in a clumsy attempt to draw Mr. Obama's attentions from me like some cocquettish debutante. Parker, Noonan and Frum were too lost in orgasmic schoolgirl giggling to offer anything more substantive. I ignored their embarrasing faux pas and pressed on with my thesis.
