Friday Night Video Dump: Obscure Indie Band/College Radio Staple Song

"Air" by The Owls.

Or for the even more obscure: Mates of State with Parachutes (Funeral Song).

Friday Night Video Dump: John Carter Of Mars Trailer

Via Darleen at Protein Wisdom.

I'm in agreement with her, this could go either way, good or bad.

Hopefully with Andrew Stanton-- of Finding Nemo and Wall-E fame-- at the helm it should help.

Friday Night Video: Something To Tug At The Heartstrings Of Any Father

Especially those who have daughters growing up still in the house.

Thanks to my wife for finding this for me.

And Now: Cowboy Poetry!

Since Congress passed their stop-gap and things have settled down
I have no idea the Cowboy Poetry Fest will still be around
Here is a sample or three of what one might hear.
Because Cowboy Poetry isn't going anywhere.

The subject of tonight's poems is one Baxter Black.
As you can see, he's quite good. He ain't no hack.
With humor and insight, he speaks his lines.
And with his lexicon dexterity, makes them rhyme.

Enough with the intros and my yabbering.
Let's get to what you came for, Baxter's jabbering.
A real life cowboy poet dealing with a range of issues,
Starting out with when you're on a horse and a lack of tissues.

Another one from Mr. Black, if you want to hear
About his dog. I dare you not to shed a tear.

About his dog. I dare you not to shed a tear.

Lastly, my favorite of his in this celebration,
What he recited at my wife's graduation.
So maybe it's the sentimental value attached to the verse.
How simple it is when mine are so much worse.

People Are Funny Critters

People are funny critters.
There's apple pie bakers,
And crooked book makers,
And blondes and brunetters,
And birthday forgetters,
And chicken fry lovers,
And blue eyed soul brothers,
And drinkers and boozers,
And winners and losers,
And elephant trainers,
And tireless campaigners,
And fixers and menders,
And paper clip benders,
And goers and stayers,
And pinochle players,
And handkerchief users,
And tissue abusers,
And interstate bikers,
And wilderness hikers,
And joggers and addicts,
And handball fanatics,
And kissers and tellers,
And friends of the fellers,
And lovers and fighters,
And finger nail biters,
And mayonnaise dippers,
And miracle whippers,
And newspaper readers,
And drivers and speeders,
And overweight hookers,
And magazine lookers,
And people with answers,
And bottomless dancers,
And quivering flunkers,
And basketball dunkers,
And readers and thinkers,
And double scotch drinkers,
And soda straw manglers,
And bar napkin stranglers,
And teasers and triers,
And high rolling flyers,
And uncles and sisters,
And passive resisters,
And virtuous girlies,
And sillies and squirlies,
And weirdoes and sickies,
And five dollar quickies,
And xylophone pickers,
And popsicle lickers,
And yawners and nappers,
And one handicappers,
And zippy old timers,
And lunatic rhymers.
People are funny critters.

by Baxter Black

This concludes tonight's session of our Cowboy Poetry Slam.
Remember this, should Congress find itself in a budgetary jam.
That private citizens can do just as well organizing this stuff,
Because when the government steps in, we've all have had enough.

Why Can't Movie Trailers Take A Hint From Video Game Designers

There is some graphic images with this clip because it deals with, you know, zombies.

It's from a game so they have more liberty with making the trailer than most movies but still, this three minute clip impacted me than most movies ever did in two hours.

More:

The trailer for Dead Island, scheduled to launch for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC at some point in 2011, is a riveting tease of the long-delayed zombie shooter. It may be the best videogame trailer I’ve ever seen; gorgeous, well-edited and emotionally engaging. The music is somber and the visuals are utterly harrowing. It makes the oversaturated zombie genre seem appealing again.

Only thing is, this isn’t really a game trailer in the traditional sense. It’s not a series of clips from the game. It’s a short film that takes place in the world of Dead Island.

Friday Night With The Stripes

A couple more from The White Stripes for tonight.

And one more from Jack White for a piece he did for the movie, Cold Mountain to show that he wasn't some garage band head banger wannabe.

Sad News In The Music World Today

The White Stripes have broken up.

Groundbreaking blues rock duo The White Stripes have announced they've split up after 13 years together.

The band, comprising of Jack White and ex-wife Meg White released a statement saying they 'will make no further new recordings or perform live.'

They added that there were a 'myriad of reasons' for the breakup, but the main reason was to 'preserve what is beautiful and special about the band.'

They might be gone as a band but their music is still around.

Plus, I've been neglecting my duties for Friday Night videos so this is an effort to catch up on it.

Friday Night Throwback Video

With all of the speed and efficiency that the Canadian Government can muster, they banned the Dire Straights song, "Money For Nothing" because of some horrible slur. Primarily the part where Mark Knopfler sings, "See that little faggot with the earring and the make-up. . ." I'm not sure what took them so long. The song was only released in 1985 and won a few Grammies.

It took the Canadian government 25 years to figure out the words to the song I learned when I was 13 years old. Now imagine the same Canadian government in charge of your health care. (Yeah, it's a cheap shot. I'll cop to that.)

Friday Night Story

Heard this the other day at a department store-- it was being played for background noise-- and couldn't get it out of my head.

About A Friday Night

Yeah, too easy after Bob "The Human Garrote" Etheridge conceding today.

Feel more like celebrating Rep.-elect Renee Ellmers win instead. Which usually ends up in a bender of Charlie Sheen proportions.

Just warning you if no posts happen before Monday.

Friday Hits A New Low

No, not me scraping bottom with this blog. I did that a long time ago.

A New Low is the name of the song by Middle Class Rut.

Thanks to the incomparable songstress, Heidi, for picking these guys out earlier this week.

What A Week This Was

It had its ups (Rand Paul, Marco Rubio) and downs (Christine O'Donnell, the Renee Ellmers recount).

It was definitively pudding worthy, that's for sure.

Time to have a drink and a short break from politics. You can't live off of apple-tinis and bread pudding alone. And enjoy Ben Folds new song.

It's Friday And That Means It's Time For A Random Video

The video is cool but there is something about the music that sticks with you.

This has to hold some record for the world's longest montage.

Night Out With Bobby Powers And Party Time

I almost forgot about this. Met Bobby at the Tea Party Convention and he passed along his CD to me.

I thought his voice had a Steely Dan sound to it myself.

It didn't seem right to leave here tonight with one cheesy song about high school. So here's some Willie to tide you over.

Friday Night: Hearkening Back To High School Edition

Not sure why I like this song. Reminds me of a time in my life that sort of sucked.
